Dinner Party

Items for a Chinese New Year party based off of an interview.

Prompt / Interview

For this project, I based it off of an interview with a friend of mine.
I asked a few questions about what his ideal party would be, his favorite holiday, favorite foods, and so on. What this resulted in was a dinner party for Chinese New Year for only one person. While I don't celebrate Chinese New Year, after doing some searching and listening from some other friends, I learned how oxymoronic this party would be. Nonetheless, it seemed like a fun challenge, and figuring out how to plan something for one person which would normally be a group activity brings about interesting results.

Research

The research I found was that most Chinese New Year events featured a lot of bright reds and yellows/golds, and of course big gatherings. While I know there are plenty of things I could make for the party that only one person could do themselves, such as a puzzle or sudoku, I opted to look for something more engaging and decided on cards. I also received rice and dumplings as foods to use, so I looked up different ways that dumplings are made and their different shapes to get an idea of how to meaningfully integrate that into the designs as well.

Initial Designs

Settling on cards for something to use during the party, I made the suites out of various forms of dumplings. For an invitation to the party, post-it notes and a calendar were the way to go. Another item to be used at the party that I thought of was maybe a couple pairs of headphones. Each of these items featured dumplings as main graphics and used dotted lines to imply rice. I made sure to keep the color scheme of everything the same and stuck to yellow and red as they are the most common and impactful Chinese New Year colors that I know of.
